Thomas Rapp studied aerospace information technology at the University of Würzburg and received his bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) with distinction in 2014. Already during his bachelor studies he was closely connected to Prof. Kayal’s research group as Thomas was system engineer and student team leader of the HORACE project, the first student project of University of Würzburg which was part of the REXUS program of University of Würzburg and supervised by Prof. Kayal and Gerhard Fellinger. With his bachelor thesis “Development and Post-Flight-Analysis of HORACE – the Horizon Acquisition Experiment” Mr Rapp evaluated the project whose aim was to prove the concept of a new horizon sensor technology based on image processing algorithms.
From 2014 on Thomas Rapp was enrolled in the joint European ERASMUS MUNDUS program Space Science and Technology (also known as SpaceMaster) at Univeristy of Würzburg and Technical University of Luleå. With the focus on Automation, Control and Communication of Space Robotics he graduated as member of round 10 of the course and received his master’s degree in 2017. In the scope of his master thesis project, Thomas Rapp developed and implemented a mission planning tool which will support the SONATE mission.
In parallel to the studies of aerospace information technology and space science and technology Mr Rapp aimed for a second bachelor’s degree of computer science at University of Würzburg, which he received in 2016 and was awarded as best graduate of the class of 2016/17 of this track including a research grant.
Thomas Rapp contributed to the SONATE mission not only with his thesis project but throughout 2017 also as student assistant and from 2018 on as research and teaching assistant of Prof. Kayal’s research team. His duties in this position are mainly the development and implementation of the embedded software of SONATE’s onboard datahandling system and to assist Prof. Kayal with the lectures and exercises offered to students of the aerospace information technology program. Besides his scientific work, Thomas is involved in different non-profit associations as volunteer, likes rowing and sings in a choir.
